CRYTEK
 
CryEngine Sandbox is an ensemble of tools that enables real-time creation, editing and in-game preview of every aspect of a game. The goal of the project was the redesign of Sandbox main interface and user experience of sub-editors, such as the Level Explorer and Asset Browser.



Crytek is an independent video game developer, publisher and technology provider based in Frankfurt. CryEngine is a game engine designed by Crytek.

Report on CryEngine user experience and future strategy



The new CryEngine design system was applied to the new interface to develop a more modern style, up-to-date with current trends. The redesign of the interface was the result of several actions:

  1. The improvement of the accessibility with better color contrast and fewer background layers. Semi-transparent overlays were introduced in the perspective view.
  2. The enhancement of the guidance for users to decrease the learning curve for new ones. All the different affordances are now displayed in a more accessible and structured way. This was obtained by reducing the degree of freedom of the interface customization.
  3. The maximization of the content of the panels by lowering unnecessary heights in the hierarchy of the information architecture.
  4. The simplification of the workflows of the different sub-editors with a more intuitive and direct approach.
